YEAR LORCA MADRID 2019

The Granadian poet Federico García Lorca arrived in Madrid in 1919 and, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lorca’s arrival in Madrid, the city wants to pay homage to such a marked date with an agenda full of activities. 

The cultural programming Lorca Madrid 2019 that takes place throughout this year, contains very varied experiences, from major conferences to exhibitions and even a film marathon. However, it is in the theatre and in the music that the universal poet will be remembered for his work, as well as for his influential figure.

The theatrical work of Lorca significantly influenced the Spanish and Madrid collective identity since its first work was released in 1920, The Hex of the Butterfly (“El maleficio de la mariposa”), in the Eslava Theater.

The success of later performances such as “Bodas de sangre” (1933) or “Yerma” (1934) attest to the strong connection established by Madrid with the poet’s play not only then, but after his death.

Now, the Madrilenian scenarios want to return the look to the Granadian through several creative proposals that deepen their life.

• 10, 11 and 13 March Lullabies at Teatros del Canal de Madrid

“Teatralia”, which will take place from March 8 to 31 in different areas of the city, has included in its program “Canciones de cuna”, a dramatized conference, with dance and singing, by Hugo Pérez de la Pica, which will be performed at “Teatros del Canal” on March 10, 11 and 13

• From March 20 to April 7 Federico to Lorca in Teatros del Canal

Federico García Lorca, co-production of “La Joven Compañía” and the Community of Madrid, will take place from March 20 to April 7 at “Teatros del Canal”. The work, with live music, will review the life of Lorca from his arrival at the “Residencia de Estudiantes” until his death, and he will do so through a large number of texts by the poet.

• March 30 Lorca at The Night of the Madrid Theaters

On March 30, on the occasion of the celebration of Madrid’s Night of theaters, the Royal Mail House will host a tour of different theatrical and musical adaptations of the works of Lorca, including “Bodas de sangre” or “Amor de Don Perlimplín con Belisa en su jardín”. Cristina Rosenvinge will interpret Ballad of Silver, “Bodas de sangre” and “Bernarda Alba”.

• April 26 exclusive previews of Lorca in The Night of the Books

The Night of the Books, on April 26, will also pay homage to Lorca through two exclusive previews: “Lunas de Nueva York” and “Luna Grande”, a tango by García Lorca; a sound fiction, a tribute concert and a “Hondo Encuentro”, very deep, with flamenco figures such as Alberto Conejero, Víctor Fernández and Miguel Poveda. The events will happen in different parts of Madrid.

• From May 3 to 5 Federico’s dream at Teatros del Canal

From May 3 to 5 there will be a continued tribute to the word of Lorca that will consist of 11 consecutive performances under the title Federico’s dream also in “Teatros del Canal”. The passes will be made from Friday to Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m.

• From November 15 to December 29 Lorca in the Autumn Festival and in Madrid in Dance

Finally and before the end of the year, the Autumn Festival, which will be held from November 15 to December 1, and Madrid in Dance, from December 3 to December 29, will also devote several representations to the figure of the artist.

And from the theater we go to the tables a year of music to pay tribute to Lorca in Madrid with several performances that explore the life and work of Lorca through flamenco.

• From the 5th to the 13th of June Festival Suma Flamenca

It is the example of the “Suma Flamenca festival”, which will run from June 5 to 13 and includes “Poema del Cante Jondo” programming and a children’s workshop for children between 7 and 10 years old named The Hex of the Butterfly.

• From March 7 to April 13, the International Festival of Sacred Art of the Community of Madrid

“Suma Flamenca” is not the only great musical event that surrenders to Federico García Lorca, the International Festival of Sacred Art of the Community of Madrid will present, from March 7 to April 13, Theory and Duende game, eight concerts by María Berasarte, Pepe Rivero, Paco Ibáñez, Soleá Morente, María José Llergo, the Trío Arbós and Rafael de Utrera, Rosa Torres-Pardo and María Toledo with Lorca as protagonist.

Conferences Year Lorca in Madrid 2019

The female characters in the work of Federico García Lorca. This is the theme that will address our latest proposal for a year full of Lorca art.

These are two of the conferences that will be held in the Women in the Arts cycle and will be entitled: “Year Lorca: The role of women in the house of Bernarda Alba” and “Year Lorca: Female identity and motherhood in Yerma ” Both will take place on March 19 in the hall of the “Sala Alcalá, 31”.

Our advice, whether or not you are in love with Lorca, is that you attend one of these artistic events in homage to the Granadian poet Federico García Lorca in Madrid. If you are, because you will be passionate and, if not, because you will approach the work of an emblematic figure of our culture that, surely, will captivate you.
